If you work in features based VFX, you need to listen to this interview. -

Understand what unionization would mean from the view of the IATSE. They’re actively trying to pull VFX under their umbrella now, and you need to be informed.

VFX is still the only part of the movie-making process that’s not unionized, and people are trying to change that. We have to fix our race to the bottom of an industry.

The Next Great Technology Platform: The Bicycle

Bikes have already changed our relationships to each other and the urban environment, but consider the potential for so much more.
Imagine a future where cities go beyond bike lanes and build the urban environment around bikes. What would a bike highway look like? What would city life be like without cars? Imagine a healthier city — no more kids in the Bronx with asthma — and reduced automobile fatalities.
The biggest opportunity here is that given what we know about how bikes change our social dynamics, how would this play out on a mass scale? Amplify that with sensing and tracking technologies on board the human battery-powered bike platform and the possibilities are endless. Handgrips that monitor your pulse and heart rate multiplied by millions will help us better understand the people who live in entire neighborhoods, and the pace of life from a global perspective. Such data will inspire exciting design solutions.

I agree with all of this. Bikes are the future.

House GOP to women: "Please don't vote for us, ever" -

newsweek:

Just happened. So what bill is that? “House Democrats say the Republican-authored law would raise requirements to prove domestic violence and sexual assault, erase confidentiality protections for immigrant women and alert abusers when their victims seek help. They say it would eliminate a path to citizenship for immigrant victims who cooperate with police and cut “culturally competent services” for Muslims, gay men and lesbians, and victims who don’t speak English,” per the New York Times. Joe Biden: “The House has passed a version of the [VAWA] that will roll back critical provisions to help victims of abuse.”

“The plethora of online Photoshop tutorials demonstrate its power and its flexibility, but I believe they also demonstrate its poor design. Think about it like this: what if each time you plunked down in front of World of Warcraft, you had to spend an hour trying to remember, wait, how do I play this?” — Rands In Repose: Two Universes This whole post is a must-read.

Seven iPad keyboard tricks | Macworld -

Pretty useful if you have an iPad.

The new powerllama.com -

I’m not abandoning Tumblr just yet, but I am going to start writing over on my own site. I think Tumblr is a great place for curation and showing off cool things, but I want to separate out my writing from everything else. Let it live on its own. So check out my new blog and tell me what you think. I’ll probably post links to there from here from time to time, too. As long as I keep writing.
